If You’re Petite…

…you’ll want to elongate your shorter-than-average frame. Get the illusion of height by choosing a gown that has long, vertical flowing lines. Look for sheath and trumpet silhouettes and gowns with an empire waist—this will elongate your body and legs and make you appear taller. Stay away from large, poufy dresses, like ball gowns, that will overwhelm your small frame and drop-waist dresses that will make your legs look shorter.

If You’re Well-Endowed…

…choosing the right neckline is key. A V neckline that isn’t too plunging or portrait and sweetheart necklines are flattering choices. Avoid a high neckline, which will only make your bust look bigger. Also stay away from empire waists, which don’t flatter a larger bust. On the bottom, look for a skirt with a moderate fullness that will balance your top-heaviness. A drop waist will help elongate your waist and therefore minimize your bust.

If You’re a Pear…

…you carry most of your weight in your lower half and have a smaller upper body. Look for a dress with an A-line skirt that will highlight your waist and chest and skim over your hips and thighs. A V neckline or spaghetti-strap top will draw the eye up toward your neckline and face and away from your lower half. It also will balance the narrowness of your shoulders with your relatively wider hips. Avoid a sheath dress, which would be an unflattering choice.

If You’re an Hourglass…

…you tend to have boobs and a butt. Look for an A-line gown, which will make you look taller and minimize your waist. Also, perfectly placed ruching can make your waist and hips appear smaller. Choose a dress made with a sturdier fabric, like satin, that will provide structure and avoid clingy fabrics, but make sure your dress isn’t too loose. The fit is crucial—an ill-fitting gown will only make you look bigger.

If You’re Slender…

…you’re thin and straight from top to bottom with slim arms and long, lean legs. The trick is to enhance your femininity by creating the illusion of a curvier figure. To do this, pick a gown that has a defined waistline or has details (like a belt) at the waist—a mermaid silhouette or ball gown that flairs out from the waist would be ideal. An empire gown creates the illusion of a fuller chest. Also look for an open neckline, a cutout back or a plunging V-neck.

What is the best type of dress if you are more like a box than a pear? I am a well endowed pear shape. Thanks

  • admin says:

We would suggest you focus on enhancing your waistline and creating an illusion of hourglass. The easiest way to do that is to pick a full skirt that will automatically balance your proportions. With a corseted top. If you are against a full skirt and would rather go A-line, accentuate your waist with a color belt.

  • Noemi says:

ummhh… i want a dress thats cute, poofy and flirty real flirty cuz i love my groom and i want it to be special!

  • Rebecca says:

what if you’re petite but have an hourglass figure?

  • Editor says:

Flaunt your curves Rebecca with a mermaid style dress, the sweeping train in the back can also help you create some heights if you wear high heels.

  • JULIE says:

What to wear – I am 6ft tall, athletic built with similar to a pear shape (tiny waist, B cup boobs, and a larger butt)…
Being so tall I feel like I would look like some sort of freak wearing a big dress but I dont want to look like I am just wearing a white evening dress either.

  • Yolanda says:

What if your Well-Endowed an a size 16, been married before but cant deside on what kind of dress to get.. But want to wear a beautiful dress that will not make me look like a house..

  • admin says:

For pear-shapes of any size A-Line is the way to go. It will hide the butt if you don’t feel comfortable rocking it. As for your height, embrace it and wear flats :) . Make sure the bridal salon adds a little length to the dress before ordering it

  • admin says:

You have to get a dress that embraces your curves, supports them (good construction underneath the dress) and fits your body. Think Christina Hendricks in Mad Men. The mistake would be to hide your shape. You are a goddess, own it and a size 16, well-endowed is a lot of guys’ dream shape. Lucky hubby!

  • Zita says:

What would be the best type of dress for a 5’4″ bride with an undefined waist, broad shoulders, a D cup and With very little hips.

  • SongGoddess86 says:

um, what if you don’t really have a waist and broad shoulders? i’m 5’6″ and pretty boxish.

  • admin says:

You are in luck! It is all about creating the illusion of a waist and the trend this year is all about belts. So again the safe A-Line , maybe even a ball gown because you have the height to carry it . Then a beautiful belt either in an accent color or with embroideries .

  • admin says:

Well, Your broad shoulder will be balanced by a corseted top enhancing your cleavage or you could also try a V neck. As for the skirt at 5’4” you can do ball-gown or A-line.

  • admin says:

For your kind of figure it is all about creating shapes . At 5 ” 6 you should really try a ball gown which would create a waistline and take care of balancing your shoulders. Goddess and Princess :)

  • Megan says:

okay, I am short, 5’1″. I have a large bust, and also an unflattering belly. I plan to wear a corset, but what shape of dress would you reccomed for my body type?

  • admin says:

So you are considered a petite size with a curvy shape. I know you mentioned a corset but that might not be the best option for you. I would recommend a well built strapless dress with good construction and not a lot of details around it. Than to accentuate the small of your waist a dress that seats at your natural waist with some cool embroideries or a sash. Definitely A-line.

Im 6 ft tall and I guess I would classify as an Hourglass bc I have a large bust, tiny waist but I have no but Its my hips that give me an hourglass shape. Im having a traditional Hispanic wedding so i need a Hispanic inspired dress. Im having trouble finding a flattering dress what style should I be looking for?

  • admin says:

You have to go for one really hot trend that would work really well on your shape. A mermaid dress that would follow your curves. As to having a traditional Hispanic touch we would suggest a mantilla as a headpiece and ruffles on the dress. You should look into Lazaro dresses. His Latin heritage is present in his style. Such as on this dress but they have more on his site.

I am small in built, c cup boobs, 26 waist, 36 hips. and an average size butt. What would be the perfect style for me?? :( I am also 5 feet 1inch tall.

  • Megan says:

I feel overwhelmed with all the body type factors I have: I’m 5’3″ with a long waist and short legs, I’m an hourglass shape (have boobs and a butt) but also very muscular with broad shoulders (I’m a swimmer and runner). I love the idea of having a princess cut A-line with a sweetheart neckline and cap sleeves–will this look work for me?

  • Hannah says:

I’m 5’6″ with long waist and short legs. I carry most of my weight on my thighs & butt but also have a small waist and 30D bust – I’m not sure if I’m pear shaped or hourglass. I’d like to enhance my bust to draw attention away from/slim down my hips & butt. Any suggestions?

  • Hannah says:

Oh and show off my slim waist in the process :)

  • Tina says:

hi,i am plumpy just a little and dont have any idea on what my wedding gown should look like.bcos i dont i see what can look nice on me with your displays.please i need ur help.thanks.TINA.

  • Katie says:

What should you do if you are 4’10″ and you are very well endowed? It suggests an empire waist to elongate the lines of my body but I have never found a dress with an empire waist that didn’t make my bust look twice the size it already is.

  • admin says:

An Empire dress for you is the worst idea possible! No wonder you did not like it. I think the all idea should be to balance your proportions. I would suggest an alter dress which would show off your shoulders and balance your bust. Then a chiffon A-line skirt or if you have a good lower body a fit and flair.

  • admin says:

    Hi Tina,
Pick a good bridal salon in your area and they will be able to narrow down a style that will enhance your body shape.

  • admin says:

Wedding Dresses are made for your body type. You can hide the weight with a ball-gown skirt and choose a natural waist cut to enhance the slimmer part in your body. As for your bust, since you are a D, you could try a corset . With good construction, your bust line will look great.

  • admin says:

a classic strapless dress with a full A-line would look great on you

  • Sheena says:

    Hi,

I am 5’4”, short legs, tiny waist, B cup, but big butt with muscular build. I have alway felt that i i have big arms for my frame and about 130pds. What kind of dress would be best for my build…

  • admin says:

Tiny waist is you secret weapon, so you can get an A-line or ballgown which will make you look like a runway model :) . As for your arms, you have many options this year. Capelets and boleros that you can add to your dress. You can also add 3 quarter sleeves that can be very slimming on most couture dresses.

  • Asya says:

Now, I was reading the suggestions for hourglass figures and I’m slighly confused. I thought that an hourglass was a good thing. The synopsis suggests dresses that “minimize your waist” If you have an hourglass figure, isn’t your waist already minimized in comparison to your other measurements? Do you have suggestions for someone who is tall, has an hourglass figure (i.e. 0.7 waist-to-hip ratio) and wants to accentuate her body?

  • admin says:

First Asia, there is no good or bad body-shape, we all come in different beautiful sizes. We usually work around average body-shapes but for example being an hourglass and petite or tall is really different. You are tall and want to accentuate your body so you should dare the “mermaid” . A fit and flare to accentuate your shape. Good luck!

  • Kat says:

I am a bigger lady. I have5’4, 48 DD, and in a size 18. I have a bigger butt, and broad shoulders. I want to wear a strapless dress that is flowy but not long. We are planning the wedding for a year from now. I am also wanting a dress that will be spectecular but not shiny and within a tight budget. What would be good for me?

  • admin says:

I think a A-line with a chiffon overlay , strapless with some waist definition would look great on you. If your shoulders are broad, you could try to add wide straps. When you go to the salon, make sure they know what your budget is. But it’s your wedding dress, so try to splurge a little! Good luck
