Wedding Dresses Accessories 2012 Trends Report

By now you’ve most likely seen the gorgeous new collections that bridal designers unveiled at the latest Bridal Market in New York City. (If you’ve some how missed them, take a peek at the wedding dresses that will be debuting at bridal stores in Fall 2012). Now it’s time to check out the accessories that will complete and personalize your look.

1/ Add a pop of color

Color is hot. The modern bride is no longer dressing all in white. What started with brides wearing a little something blue as a nod to tradition has blossomed into the trend of adding a pop of color from any hue of the rainbow.  Many designers sent colored bridal gowns down the runway (there wasn’t a single white dress in Vera Wang’s entire collection!), but it’s the colored adornments that really stood out. Regardless of the shade of your dress, you can always add some pizzazz and personality through colored accessories.

Elizabeth Fillmore accessorized this look with a blush blusher and Rivini added color with a lavender belt.

A large bright yellow flower by Tessa Kim adds a huge pop of color and this Claire Pettibone dress with a woven golden belt is a bit subtler.

These bold beauties by Aruna Seth come in a variety of hues.

2/ Go Back in Time With a Retro Look

The past is back. Many designers showed wedding dresses that looked like they’d walked right out of the past—from the Victorian period right through the 80s—and, of course, there were accessories to go along with each era.

Enchanted Atelier displayed an entire table full of vintage-inspired accessories.

Pre-20′s Retro Look

Pre-’20s: No need to spend a bundle to get an authentic vintage feel...if you pick the right wedding dress. All Claire Pettibone’s models needed for a turn-of-the-century look were dainty crowns of flowers.

The 20′s and 30′s Retro Look

Jenny Packham showed a whole line of vintage-inspired gowns and accessories. A cream seed-beaded bag by Nina Bridal and an intricately beaded cape by Desla Couture evoke the elegance of a bygone era.

The 40′s and 50′s Retro Look

A stunning clutch (another huge trend this season!) is the only accessory needed for this Marchesa wedding gown. A simple, yet elegant cardigan makes this short Carolina Herrera wedding dress look like something straight out of the ’50s.

The 60′sand 70′s Retro Look

A lace capelet takes this modern Alvina Valenta dress back in time. A beaded headband by Debbie Carlisle looks like it could have been worn by a flower child.

3/ Try On a Shorter Veil

Veils are getting shorter. The current obsession with all things retro means the short and chic blusher veil is making a comeback.

A lace-edged blusher paired with a Blush wedding dress. Elizabeth Fillmore chose a delicate floral-strewn veil.

Looking for a veil that’s more unconventional? There were a couple of avant-garde veils that walked down the runway.

Junko Yoshioka’s hair accessory is simple, but looks a bit like something for the bride with a toothache. Badgley Mischka Bride’s veil, which seems like it could be easily replicated, was merely stiff netting wrapped around the model’s head and pinned in the back.

Try a matching veil. Many bridal designers are creating matching veils in case you’d like an ultra-coordinated ensemble. Rather than spending hours trying to find a veil (whether stylishly short or more traditional in length) to complement your dress, you can now pick one that was made to perfectly match your chosen gown and leave the length choice up to the designer.

The flowers on the veil are the same ones as on this Marchesa wedding gown. Reem Acra created a veil made from the same floral-patterned fabric as the wedding dress.

4/ Get a belt to customize your dress

Belts are still big. This trend is still going strong, which isn’t surprising since bridal belts are an easy way to customize your wedding dress and make it truly unique. Adding a belt can drastically change the look of a simple dress or make an elaborate dress even more special.

5/Go for an over the top look

Go big and over the top. If you’re looking to make a bold and unique statement with your bridal accessories, get inspired by the styling of these bridal designers’ runway looks.
